Community Engagement for Storm Risk Reduction

Currently, Mitigation Plans are required by several federal programs for community participation in them. While these plans act as a beginning of important risk assessment/risk reduction activities, this project proposes that even additional effort and community involvement in these processes are important in order to achieve broader and more beneficial outcomes for Louisiana communities. Two communities will be the subject of the project. The first, Delcambre, is partnered with UNO-CHART subcontractor, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. A second is being selected in the eastern part of the state. In both communities, a one-year process of risk reduction collaboration will be implemented, adapted as it is ongoing and evaluated for best practices.

In addition to these efforts UNO-CHART is providing assistance to parishes and communities more inland who are receiving their new NFIP flood maps (DFIRMs) and need assistance in sharing the maps with their residents. LSUAg is the subcontractor for this second part of the project; they are providing the traveling computer system and map retrieval process for the open house activities.
